WARWICK, RI — Warwick Police report no threat to the public after finding a reported firearm-wielding man, 52, dead at a Spofford Avenue home Wednesday afternoon.
At about 1 p.m., Warwick officers responded to the home to check on the wellbeing of a man, reportedly possessing a firearm, according to a Warwick Police statement on the incident. Police did not find the man at the home and began a search of the area and known locations for him. At about 3 p.m., officers received information that the man had returned to the residence with the firearm.
As a precaution, a perimeter was set up around the residence and several neighboring residents were evacuated from the area. Warwick Police SWAT was able to make entry into the residence and located a man, dead.
Detectives are investigating the events leading up to and surrounding the man’s death. Identification of the man is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin. Warwick Police noted more information will be provided pending the outcome of the investigation.
“The Warwick Police Department sends its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” Police noted in the statement.
