WARWICK, RI — Officers Evan Johnson and Michael Isherwood were called to 2 Speer St. April 27 at 12:31 a.m. for a white SUV driving around in front of a house, and arrested the driver on a DUI charge.
The man making the report said he had found a woman in a white SUV with Massachusetts plates driving around in front of his house on Elks Lane and asked if she needed help. After speaking with the driver, the man said she appeared intoxicated. She refused the man’s help, according to Johnson’s report, after which the man said he saw her back into another car while attempting to leave Hull Street. The caller remained with the driver until the officers arrived.
Johnson arrived to find a white Land Rover Velar with the driver standing just outside the open driver’s side door, according to the report. He identified the driver as Yesenia Pereya, 43, of 936 Chalkstone Ave., FL Apt. 3, Providence, and learned from her that she was out celebrating at a hooka bar in Providence earlier, according to the report.
She also told Johnson she had drank a gin and orange juice cocktail and had been attempting to drive her friend, the passenger in the Land Rover, home when she got lost, according to the officer’s report.
An inspection of the 1996 Toyota Camry she struck, which she did not seem aware of, Johnson reported, showed a scratch and white paint transfer on the passenger side. The Land Rover had a corresponding blemish, according to the report.
During a series of sobriety tests showed Pereya exhibited a lack of smooth pursuit and involuntary eye movement in her vision, an inability to walk a straight line keeping heel-to-toe cadence as instructed. She refused to perform a one-leg-stand test.
