Warwick Varsity Sports: Pilgrim Boys Notch First Hockey ‘W’

WARWICK, RI — Pilgrim’s boys hockey team won its first game of the year, while the Toll Gate girls basketball squad maintained their intracity edge over Pilgrim and Hendricken had its seven-game hockey win streak snapped this week in Warwick varsity sports, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Boys hockey:

Patriots earn first win of the season

Pilgrim defeated Cumberland 10-5 on Jan. 5, earning the Patriots their first victory of the season. The Rhode Island High School Hockey website reported that junior Hunter Jones struck first for the Clippers 54 seconds into the game, but the Patriots stormed back with goals by six different players to take a 6-1 advantage into the final period. Cumberland seniors Sam Lopes and Connor Magill potted three goals in the third period to bring the score to 6-4, but that was as close as the Clippers could get before Pilgrim senior Ryan Barlow and junior Jack Sayler scored 25 seconds apart to open an 8-4 advantage. Junior Sean Taylor slipped the puck past Pilgrim senior netminder Braxton Bragg at 12:21 of the third period, then the Patriots tallied two more for the 10-5 win. Barlow led Pilgrim scorers with five points (1 G, 4 A), with Sayler and junior Kyle Menard scoring two goals each for the Patriots. Pilgrim dropped a 2-1 nail biter against Burrillville on Jan. 12. Bishop Hendricken had its seven-game win streak snapped in a 4-2 loss to Prout on Jan. 12. The Crusaders took a 2-1 lead into the third period and held off a late score by the Hawks to secure the win and first place overall in Division 1. Hendricken blanked Mount St. Charles 2-0 on Jan. 5  and beat Burrillville 6-1 on Jan. 6. East Greenwich/Toll Gate fell to Barrington 5-1 on Jan. 4, with senior Dan Kennedy scoring the only goal for the local co-op squad. Sophomore goalie Wyatt Gelzhiser made 25 saves for EG/TC.

Next up: East Greenwich/Toll Gate travels to Woodstock Academy on Jan. 17 before hosting LaSalle on Jan. 19. Hendricken hits the road for five straight games, starting with North Kingstown on Jan. 13 and including stops at Notre Dame Academy in West Haven, Conn., on Jan. 15; Pilgrim on Jan. 19; Cumberland on Jan. 20, and Moses Brown on Jan. 24. Pilgrim travels to Woodstock Academy in Connecticut on Jan. 15 before hosting Hendricken on Jan. 19 and going on a two-game road trip to North Kingstown on Jan. 20 and to Mount St. Charles on Jan. 24.

Girls hockey:

Co-op blanked by Clippers

The Pilgrim/Toll Gate co-op team dropped a 4-0 shutout to Cumberland on Jan. 5, leaving the newly-formed squad winless on the rebuilding season.

Next up: The Titans embark on a four-game road trip starting on Jan. 25 at Burrillville, followed by games against Cumberland on Jan. 27, Narragansett on Jan. 31, and Barrington on Feb. 16 before concluding the season with a home-at-home against Burrillville on Feb. 20 and 24.

Girls basketball:

Titans maintain intracity edge

Toll Gate defeated Pilgrim 59-39 on Jan. 11, giving the Titans a 2-0 lead in the intracity rivalry. The Titans squad secured a 43-35 road win over North Providence on Jan. 5 before taking a 43-35 loss against North Smithfield at home on Jan. 8. Toll Gate currently holds a 5-4 overall record, good for third in Division 3. Pilgrim dropped a 31-30 decision at North Smithfield on Jan. 5, leaving the Patriots winless on the road so far this season.

Next up: Toll Gate prepares for a two-game homestand starting on Jan. 16 against Burrillville and following up with a Jan. 18 matchup against Middletown. Pilgrim hits the road for two games, first at Lincoln School on Jan. 19 and then visiting Exeter-West Greenwich on Jan. 22.

Boys basketball:

Classical snaps Hawks’ two-game win streak

Bishop Hendricken went on a two-game winning streak, defeating Westerly 60-42  at home on Jan. 4 and North Kingstown 74-50 on the road on Jan. 8 before taking a 62-41 loss at Classical on Jan. 10. The Hawks currently hold a 4-2 overall record, fourth place in Division 1. Pilgrim couldn’t outlast Mt. Hope on Jan. 5, dropping a 50-49 decision to the Huskies. The Patriots held a 23-16 advantage at halftime, but Mt. Hope responded with a 34-26 second half. Pilgrim fell to Shea 60-41 on Jan. 8, dropping the Patriots to 4-5 on the season. Toll Gate fell to St. Raphael Academy 94-34 on Jan. 12. Pilgrim hosted Providence Country Day on Jan. 12, Hendricken kicked off the Spalding Hoop Hall Classic with a game against Gulliver Prep Academy from Miami, FL, on Jan. 13, and Toll Gate hosted Times Squared Academy on Jan. 13. Results for these games were not available by deadline for this article.

Next up:  Hendricken travels to Cumberland on Jan. 15 and to Narragansett on Jan. 16 before returning home for a Jan. 18 tilt against East Providence. Toll Gate visits Johnston on Jan. 18 before hosting Tolman on Jan. 19 and Rogers on Jan. 22. Pilgrim plays Tiverton on the road on Jan. 16 and hosts Hope on Jan. 18.
