Warwick Varsity Sports: Local Squads Extend Win Streaks

WARWICK, RI — Three local teams extended their win streaks this week in Warwick varsity sports, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Boys hockey:

Hawks win two straight road games; Pilgrim earns second win

Bishop Hendricken won the first two games of a four-game road trip by a combined score of 16-1, blanking North Kingstown 13-0 on Jan. 13 before defeating Notre Dame Academy 3-1 in West Haven, Conn., on Jan. 15. According to the Rhode Island High School Hockey website, the Hawks racked up a 53-7 shot advantage over SK, with senior Jack Larose leading Hendricken scorers with 4 goals and two assists. Junior James Carrara and freshmen Colton Simas and Nick Stevens each added two scores for Hendricken, while junior netminder Avery Picchione secured the shutout. Pilgrim secured its second win of the season in a 4-3 overtime victory at Woodstock Academy on Jan. 15. Junior Richie Cavanaugh scored two goals and added two helpers for the Patriots, while fellow junior Jack Sayler added a goal and three assists. The East Greenwich/Toll Gate co-op squad dropped a 4-2 decision to Moses Brown on Jan. 12, battling to a 2-2 tie in the third period before the Quakers scored two late goals for the win. Seniors Cooper Grossguth and Dan Kennedy tallied scores for the Avengers, while sophomore goalie Wyatt Gelzhiser made 20 saves.

Next up: Pilgrim hosts Hendricken on Jan. 19 before heading out on at two-game road trip to North Kingstown on Jan. 20 and to Mount St. Charles on Jan. 24. Hendricken visits Cumberland on Jan. 20 and Moses Brown on Jan. 24. East Greenwich/Toll Gate traveled to Woodstock Academy on Jan. 17; results were not available by deadline for this article. The Avengers host LaSalle on Jan. 19 before embarking on a five-game road trip.

Girls hockey:

Co-op squad returns to action Jan. 25

The Pilgrim/Toll Gate co-op team is off this week, and begins a four-game road trip on Jan. 25 at Burrillville, followed by games against Cumberland on Jan. 27, Narragansett on Jan. 31, and Barrington on Feb. 16 before concluding the season with a home-at-home series against Burrillville on Feb. 20 and 24.

Boys basketball:

Patriots win two at home

Pilgrim won back-to-back home games, beating Providence Country Day 63-32 on Jan. 12 before doubling up on Hope 60-30 on Jan. 18. The Patriots currently hold a 6-5 overall record, eight place in Division 2. Hendricken went 2-1 in its last three matchups, falling 62-39 to Gulliver Prep Academy on Jan. 13 before defeating Cumberland 62-60 on Jan. 15 and East Providence by a 75-70 margin on Jan. 18. The Hawks improved their overall record to 7-3, currently fourth in Division 1. Toll Gate fell to Johnston 76-46 on Jan. 18, leaving the Titans 1-9 overall.

Next up: Hendricken visits LaSalle Academy on Jan. 22 before hosting Central on Jan. 24. Pilgrim travels to Tiverton on Jan. 20 and to Cranston West on Jan. 22. Toll Gate hosts Tolman on Jan. 19 and Rogers on Jan. 22.

Girls basketball:

Titans extend win streak to 2

Toll Gate won its second straight game after a 47-25 victory over Middletown on Jan. 18, improving the Titans’ record to 6-4 on the season, placing them fourth in Division 3. Titans Mary McNulty and Adeline Areson each recorded double-doubles, with McNulty scoring 14 points and hauling in 12 rebounds, while Areson added 10 points, 10 boards, and six assists. Pilgrim was off this week.

Next up: Pilgrim travels to Lincoln School on Jan. 19 and visits Exeter-West Greenwich on Jan. 22.
