Warwick varsity sports: Hawks skaters score 11 in shutout over NK

WARWICK, RI — Bishop Hendricken overwhelmed North Kingstown in hockey and scraped out a win against Cranston East in basketball while Pilgrim and Toll Gate had mixed results during this week’s action in Warwick varsity sports, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Boys hockey:

Hawks trounce NK; Pilgrim, EG/Toll Gate off to tough starts 

Bishop Hendricken shut out North Kingstown 11-0 on Dec. 12, with 11 different scorers contributing to the Hawks’ effort. Senior captain Griffin Crane tallied a goal and three assists for Hendricken. Pilgrim dropped a close 1-0 contest to Moses Brown on Dec. 10, with senior Braxton Bragg stopping 18 of 19 shots. The East Greenwich/Toll Gate co-op squad is off to an 0-2 start after falling 4-3 against Prout on Dec. 8 and 4-1 against Burrillville on Dec. 9. 

Next up: East Greenwich/Toll Gate hosts Hendricken on Dec. 15 and North Kingstown on Dec. 16. Hendricken welcomes Barrington on Dec. 16. Pilgrim travels to LaSalle Academy on Dec. 15 and hosts Warde/Ludlowe High School from Fairfield, Conn., on Dec. 16. 

Girls hockey:

Early lead doesn’t hold up for co-op team

Despite two goals in the opening period, the Toll Gate/Pilgrim co-op team couldn’t keep pace with Barrington in a 5-2 loss on Dec. 9. Senior Georgia Field and junior Ayla Paley each had a goal and an assist, and junior Flora Meunier made 28 saves against the Eagles. 

Next up: The Warwick squad travels to Smithfield on Dec. 15.

Boys basketball:

Hawks slip past Bolts; Titans, Patriots fall

Defending state champions Bishop Hendricken eked out a 37-35 win over Cranston East on Dec. 13, surviving a late charge and a Thunderbolts shot at the buzzer that didn’t fall. Sophomore Will Cary led Hawks scorers with 8 points, with junior Jakob Reyes tallying 7 and junior Jeremy Redd adding 6. East scored nearly half its points — 18 — from three-point land while Hendricken went 3-for-11 from the free throw line in the first half. Pilgrim fell to South Kingstown 62-48 on Dec. 11 in the Patriots’ first contest of the season. Junior Carter Clifton scored 15 for Pilgrim in the defeat. Toll Gate went 1-1 over the past week, falling to Mount St. Charles 48-35 on Dec. 9 and defeating Tiverton 45-39 on Dec. 14. 

Next up: Hendricken hosts Portsmouth on Dec. 15. Toll Gate travels to Hope High School in Providence on Dec. 18. Pilgrim visits Mt. Hope High School in Bristol on Jan. 5. 

Girls basketball:

Titans win opener, Patriots drop two

Toll Gate defeated Lincoln School 47-36 on Dec. 13, securing the Titans’ first win of the new season and placing the squad among four undefeated teams in Division 3. Pilgrim started the season 0-2 after falling to Burrillville 43-36 on Dec. 11 and to Exeter-West Greenwich 44-31 on Dec. 13. 

Next up: Toll Gate visits East Greenwich on Dec. 15 and hosts Lincoln on Dec. 19. Pilgrim travels to Lincoln on Dec. 15 and hosts Middletown on Dec. 19.
