Tropical Storm Arthur Threatens Rain, Fireworks Rescheduled to Saturday

Warwick, RI  UPDATE: 4:13 p.m.: Forecasters say there’s a strong chance of rain during the next few days as Tropical Storm Arthur travels up the East Coast, and City Hall has postponed its fireworks show till Sautrday night.

The storm is expected to strengthen to hurricane-force, and North Carolina is under a hurricane watch, but forecasters are only predicting heavy rain for the Rhode Island area from Arthur.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Warwick , warning of the possibility of strong thunderstorms tonight and widespread thunderstorms Thursday and Friday, with heavy rainfall and the possibility of flash flooding.

The City’s Fireworks display, originally scheduled for Thursday night for spectators at the Oakland Beach seawall and Warwick City Park, promises temperatures in the low 80s, but a 60 percent chance of showers, according to the National Weather Service.

The display has been rescheduled to the event’s rain date Saturday, July 5, which is forecast for partly sunny skies and a high of 61 degrees.

For the Fourth of July, there’s a 70 percent chance of showers with the possibility of a thunderstorm, and a high near 78 degrees, according to the NWS. Tropical storm conditions are possible Friday night, with thunderstorms possible before 9 p.m., with a 60 percent chance of rain and a low of 64 degrees.
