WARWICK, RI — Officer Ali Jaafar was driving north on Jefferson Boulevard July 24 at 8:03 p.m. when a 2004 Honda Accord with heavily tinted windows passed him headed south, prompting the officer to stop the driver, arresting him for possession of crack and marijuana.
Jaafar made a U-turn and stopped the car on Main Avenue, identifying the driver as Alvin Fernandez, 26, of 11 Evergreen Dr., Apt. 2nd, East Providence. As they spoke, Jaafar noted a strong odor of marijuana in the car.
Jaafar also noticed multiple air fresheners through out the car, and an odor of air freshener as if it had just been sprayed in the interior. Fernandez admitted to possessing a marijuana cigarette, and a small bag of marijuana, according to the officer’s report.
Jaafar asked Fernandez to move his car to Spooner Avenue and then asked him to step out so he could search the vehicle. Inside, Jaafar noted the center console was loose, and was able to remove it, finding bags containing 3.9 grams of crack cocaine, and 4 grams of marijuana.
Jaafar arrested Fernandez and transported him to Warwick Police Headquarters, 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, where he was charged with manufacturing/possession/delivering a schedule II substance, crack cocaine, and possession of marijuana, 1 oz. or less, unlawful install of sunscreen, and failure to wear a seat belt.
Fernandez was held overnight for a morning court appearance.
