WARWICK, RI — Anthony Sudduth, 47, of Warwick, showed signs of intoxication May 9 when he crashed his 2013 Chevy Equinox, striking and seriously injuring Haylee Molina, 7, and on Thursday Warwick Police added felony driving under the influence of alcohol to the felony driving to endanger charge they leveled that night.
The second charge was added Thursday morning in Kent County Superior Court.
An initial investigation determined Sudduth had been driving the Equinox west on King Street when he tried to make a left hand turn onto Greenwich Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle. The SUV traveled across Greenwich Ave., becoming airborne briefly before hitting the child on the sidewalk near Pontiac Playground. The SUV came to a stop inside the grounds of the playground, according to police.
Haylee was transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where she underwent many surgeries to help her recover from her injuries, and she is now recovering in a wheelchair.
The Warwick community has since rallied to aid Haylee and her family with fundraisers to assist with the 7-year-old’s medical bills. A Gofundme page dedicated to raising money to aid Haylee’s recovery, set up by Deb D’Amario Violette, has raised $16,950 of its $25,000 goal.
