WARWICK, RI — Two speakers during the Jan. 14 Warwick School Committee’s public comment segment considered a new assistant superintendent a non-starter.

Warwick Teachers Union President Darlene Netcoh and teacher Tracy McDermott each spoke against establishing such a new senior administration post, which Superintendent Philip Thornton said would be “revenue neutral.”

“I’m glad that you tabled the items that you tabled,” Netcoh said, noting the positions proposed in an organizational tree submitted with the meeting’s documents are not budgeted for.

Don’t do it,” Netcoh said, warning that the move would justify criticism the School Department has received from the public and the City Council.

McDermott was also critical of the timing and wisdom of a new senior administration position.

“The city was in dire straights and we were all going to wind up in receivership. And here we are, hiring an assistant superintendent,” she said.
