Following the Warwick crash, the rider of the first motorcycle, Dervi Pena, 34, of 85 Andem St., Providence, was thrown from his vehicle. He was transported to Kent Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The rider of the second motorcycle was taken to Kent Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A third motorcycle crashed when the operator tried to avoid the collision. He also was taken to Kent Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the SUV was not hurt.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Rhode Island State Police Wickford Barracks, the Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Forensic Services Unit.
“We strongly encourage all motorists to be extra vigilant when driving cars and motorcycles,” Colonel Assumpico, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police, said. “Buckle up – or wear a helmet if operating a motorcycle. Don’t speed. Don’t drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Don’t drive while distracted. Also, pay attention to other motorists on the roads to protect yourself.”
Two other vehicle crashes resulted in fatalities this weekend, which State Police reported are still under investigation:
