STATE HOUSE — The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of the Pawtuxet Valley has named Rep. James B. Jackson (D-Dist. 26, West Warwick, Coventry, Warwick) grand marshal for its 60th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade March 17 on Washington and Main streets in West Warwick.
The organization held a banquet at Club Jogues in Coventry last Saturday to officially welcome the representative to the top of a long list of past parade leaders.
“It is a tremendous honor for me to be considered for this,” said Jackson, who was elected to the House of Representatives last November. “The Rhode Island Irish community has always been very exuberant in its pride, and I’m excited to join in on this time-honored celebration of our heritage. Seeing the parade-goers marching through the streets of Arctic has also been a longtime herald of spring — the first event every year that gets everyone outside, so it’s a great joy to be part of that.”
The parade will kick off at 1 p.m. from the Iannotti Funeral Home, 415 Washington St., on the Coventry/West Warwick town line, and will end at West Warwick Town Hall. The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick post-parade party will be held at the Elks Lodge, 60 Clyde St., West Warwick, with corned beef sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers and fries.
Trophies will be awarded for parade categories and donations will be accepted at the door.
