WARWICK, RI —  Warwick and Rhode Island schools called delays as overnight icy conditions persisted into the morning commute, with a flood watch issued for the Pawtuxet River.

“Periods of light freezing drizzle are possible this morning through 10 a.m. This could lead to slick spots on untreated roadways and side walks. Use caution if traveling this morning,” according to the National Weather Service.

Consequently, the following Warwick public and private schools called delays for the morning:

Warwick Warwick Public Schools: One Hour Delay

Warwick West Bay Collaborative: Upper School DL/RITA 1 hr delay; Upper staff report 1hr delay

Eleanor Briggs School: Delayed 1 hour

Warwick St Kevin SchoolDelayed 1 hour; No Morning Care
Warwick St Peter SchoolNo AM Buses; Regular school hours
Warwick St Rose of Lima SchoolDelayed 1 hour; No Early Morning Care

The end of the week brings new risk of flooding throughout the state and, in Warwick, along the Pawtuxet River as heavy rain is expected the next few days. The NWS has issued a Flood Watch for the area, in effect though Saturday night.

“Flooding is NOT expected to be as significant as what occurred earlier this month. However, the Pawtuxet River could reach its moderate flood stage Thursday night or Friday morning. This could bring flooding as deep as 2 to 3 feet to low lying areas of Cranston and Warwick. Flooding of streets and urban areas is also possible,” the NWS reports. The agency advises:

  • If you live in an area prone to flooding, plan ahead.
  • Ensure sump pumps are working or take action to protect your property.
  • Make sure vehicles are moved out of areas that could flood.
  • Monitor the latest forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings.
