WARWICK, RI — Officer Zachary Black first noticed the red 2015 Kia as it pulled into the “Police-Only” entrance at Warwick Police Headquarters, 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, ultimately stopping and arresting the driver on a DUI charge.

Black observed as the Kia backed out of the entrance and exited the parking area onto Veterans Memorial Drive headed west, then through the rotary, headed back on Veterans Memorial Drive headed east, crossing over the center street line twice before pulling the driver over, the officer reported.

Black stopped the Kia at 111 Veterans Memorial Drive, and identified the driver as Luz Jerez, 25, of 80 1st Ave., Cranston. Black noticed her speech was slurred, and that her breath smelled of alcohol, according to the report.

When Black asked where she was coming from, Jerez said she had been left Nara Club in Providence and had been headed to her cousin’t house in Cranston. She said she had one shot of Hennesy and cranberry, according to the report.

During a series of sobriety tests, Jerez exhibited a lack of smooth pursuit and involuntary eye movement in her vision, failed to keep heel-to-toe cadence during a walk and turn test, and was unable to balance on one foot, Black reported.

Given Jerez’s performance on the tests, Black arrested her on a DUI charge, and transported her to Warwick Police Headquarters again, where she refused a breath test of her blood alcohol level, according to the report.

Black charged Jerez with DUI, first offense, blood alcohol unknown, and also cited her for refusing the test. She was then transported to Kent Hospital for detox treatment.
