WARWICK, RI— On Jan. 10, at 6:58 p.m., Officer Michael Bailey received a call for a red Toyota Corolla that had rolled into another car at Warwick Avenue and Post Road, then driven away slowly, swerving, found and stopped the offending driver, arresting him on a DUI charge.

Bailey found the car on Squantum Drive and signaled with lights and siren to the driver to stop, but the Toyota kept going down the street, eventually stopping at 510 Squantum Drive, according to Bailey’s report.

When Bailey approached the driver, he had no identification and initially ID’d himself under a name that could not be found in the system. Bailey was eventually able to identify the man as Manuel Pablo, 35, of 104 Waverly St., Apt. 1, Providence, according to the report.

As he worked to identify the driver, Bailey also noted two empty bottles of Jose Cuervo on the passenger’s side floor of the car, and an empty beer in the center console. He could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from Pablo, which intensified as he complied with the officer’s request to step from the car, according to the report.

Pablo had to mostly rely on Spanish while speaking with Bailey, during which the man slurred his words and swayed on his feet. He also continually put his hands in his pockets, one of which, when searched, had a pint-sized bottle of Jose Curvo, 3/4ths full, inside, according to Bailey’s report.

Pablo told Bailey he was on his way home in Providence, and appeared unaware that he was not in Providence, Bailey reported.

During sobriety tests, Pablo ignored instructions for the vision test, which Bailey skipped, stepped off-lineo and only traveled five steps before nearly falling over during a walk and turn test, and could not remain standing long enough to attempt the one-leg-stand test.

Bailey arrested Pablo and transported to Warwick Police Headquarters, 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, where he registered a .284 and .277 on successive blood alcohol breath tests. Bailey charged him with DUI, first offense, greater than .15, operating without a license, and obstructing an officer.

Pablo also had an active warrant for his arrest for a probation violation. He was later transported to the ACI on the violation.
