Warwick, RI – Warwick Police officers responding to a report of an erratic driver striking multiple curbs in a red 2008 Mazda CX9 found the woman attempting to leave the parking lot of Coastway Credit Union May 22 at 8:23 p.m., stopped and charged her with DUI.
Officer Mitchell Voyer found the driver attempting to leave the bank lot and told the driver, later identified as Tammy Martinez, 42, of 40 Oak Grove St., Apt. 9, to stay in the lot, according to the officer’s report. She nodded and backed up, nearly striking a sign.
Martinez stopped the car at the entrance to the lot and began to step out of the vehicle, stumbling, and Voyer told her to stay inside.
Voyer asked the woman where she was coming from and if she’d had anything to drink. The woman replied that she’d just left the Trap Bar in East Greenwich, and that she’d had three glasses of wine. She said she’d just passed her home and was turning around to go back.
As the two spoke, Voyer reported he could smell alcohol on her, that she mumbled and slurred her speech, that her eyes were bloodshot, and her face was red.
Voyer asked Martinez to peform a series of field sobriety tests, which she failed, showing a lack of smooth pursuit in her vision, nearly falling over during the walk-and-turn, and was unable to keep her balance during the one-leg-stand test.
Voyer arrested Martinez and transported her to Warwick Police Headquarters at 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, where she refused to submit to a breath test. She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, first offense, blood alcohol unknown, and cited for refusing the breath test.
She was issued a court summons to answer the charges on June 4, and released to a sober adult.
