WARWICK, RI — A Hasbro Children’s Hospital doctor alerted Warwick Police to a Warwick boy’s serious injury, leading WPD detectives to arrest the boy’s father March 9.
According to the physician, the boy had been admitted the previous evening with what was described as a serious bodily injury, according to Warwick Police.
WPD Detectives Randy Bell and Oliver Pinheiro, members of the Special Victims’ Unit (SVU) investigated the boy’s injury, leading to their arrest of the boy’s father, Gerardo Casillas, 43, of Warwick.
Casillas will be arraigned today in Third Division District Court on a charge of First Degree Child Abuse. First Degree Child Abuse carries a possible 20 year sentence upon conviction, Warwick Police noted in announcing the arrest and charges against Casillas.
Under Rhode Island law 40-11, anyone who suspects that a child has been a victim of sexual abuse by another child is required to report the incident to the state Department of Children, Youth, and Families within 24 hours.
Anyone with knowledge of child abuse is legally obligated to report it to the DCYF Child Abuse Hotline (24/7) at 1-800-RI CHILD (1-800-742-4453).
