PROVIDENCE, RI — The RI Health Department warns a Cumberland Farms Ice Cream recall also includes Hershey’s, Friendly’s and many other ice cream brands selling ice cream produced by Totally Cool, Inc.
The Owings Mills, Maryland manufacturer has recalled multiple brands of ice cream including a Friendly’s Ice Cream Hershey’s Ice Cream recall, Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery, Yelloh!, Jeni’s, The Frozen Farmer, Marco, ChipWich, AMAFruits, Taharka, Dolcezza Gelato, and LaSalle. All the named brands may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to Totally Cool Inc.’s ice cream recall as announced on the FDA’s website. The FDA has also posted a .PDF file listing each Totally Cool Inc. recall product with photos of the labels.
The recalled products were distributed nationwide and were sold in retail locations and by direct delivery.
According to the FDA, Totally Cool, Inc. has ceased the production and distribution of the affected products after FDA sampling which discovered the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The company is continuing its investigation into the cause of the contamination.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or older adults, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
There have been no reported illnesses related to this recall to date.
Anyone who has purchased any recalled products should throw them away or return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
