COVENTRY, RI — The Oakers snapped a two-game losing streak in football, and both soccer teams secured victories during this week’s varsity sports action, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.
Football:
Gridders score big win
Coventry defeated the North Smithfield/Mount St. Charles co-op team 41-7 on Oct. 14, moving the Oakers into a three-way tie for third place in Division 3. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for Coventry during which the Oakers scored 12 total points.
Next up: Coventry travels to Classical on Oct. 21 and to Tolman on Oct. 27.
Boys soccer:
Oakers trounce Tiverton
Coventry followed up a 4-1 victory over Smithfield on Oct. 10 with a decisive 7-3 road win over Tiverton on Oct. 17. The Oakers leapt out to a 5-0 lead in the first half and held off the Tigers’ late 3-goal rally for the win. Junior Israel Anderson led the scoring with three goals and two assists, while junior Adam Leclair added two scores and senior Aiden Wilkins contributed a goal and two assists. Senior Aiden Simao made 7 saves to secure the win, which moved the Oakers into second place in Division 2.
Next up: Coventry kicks off a two-game homestand against Burrillville on Oct. 20, then hosts Narragansett on Oct. 24.
Girls soccer:
Lady Oakers prevail in close contest
Senior Caitlin Dowling was named player of the game in Coventry’s 3-2 win over Burrillville on Oct. 18, posting a goal and an assist in the winning effort. Junior Leila Moniz added two goals in the victory, improving the Lady Oakers’ record to 3-5-3 on the season.
Next up: Coventry hosts Mount St. Charles on Oct. 24, then travels to North Providence on Oct. 26.
