Coventry Sports: Co-op hockey squad fights to a draw

COVENTRY, RI — Coventry’s co-op girls hockey team skated to a tie against the South County Storm while the boys squad took a tough loss and the girls’ basketball team dropped its first contest of the new season during this week’s action in Coventry varsity sports, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Girls hockey:

Locals skate to tie vs. Gansett

Smithfield/Coventry/Moses Brown battled the South County Storm co-op team to a 3-3 tie on Dec. 8 in the first matchup of the 2023-24 season. The defending state champion Sentinels notched goals in each period and held off a two-goal charge in the third period by the Storm to secure the tie. Junior Samantha Haun and sophomores Payton Abrams and Bailey Kent tallied goals, and sophomore netminder Madeline Ammatuna made 21 saves for the South County team, formed after a successful petition to the RIIL to allow more than three high schools to contribute to co-op squads. The Storm represents Narragansett, North and South Kingstown, Chariho, and Prout. 

Next up: Smithfield/Coventry/Moses Brown visits Woodstock (CT) Academy on Dec. 13. 

Boys hockey:

Oakers drop first outing

Coventry fell 7-1 against Ponaganset in the Oakers’ first contest of the new season on Dec. 9 at West Warwick Civic Center. The win placed the Chieftains in second place in Division 2 while Coventry fell to 0-1. 

Next up: The Oakers travel to Portsmouth on Dec. 15. 

Girls basketball:

E-WG defeats Coventry

Coventry lost to Exeter-West Greenwich 50-31 on Dec. 8 in an interdivisional road matchup. The loss drops the Oakers to 0-1 for the new season.

Next up: Coventry hosted Scituate on Dec. 11; no information about the game was available on the RIIL website by deadline for this article. The Oakers travel to Tiverton on Dec. 13. 

Boys basketball: Coventry plays its first game hosting Johnston on Dec. 12.
