COVENTRY, RI — The varsity boys hockey team won its first game of the season, and the local basketball squads earned victories this week in Coventry sports, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.
Boys hockey:
Oakers notch first ‘W’ of the season
Coventry outlasted South Kingstown 6-5 on Jan. 6, earning the Oakers their first victory of the season. According to the Rhode Island High School Hockey website, sophomore Aaron Jarbeau tallied the first goal of the game for the Rebels at 4:27 of the first period, but Coventry junior Collin King struck back at 6:08 with an assist by fellow junior Jack Horsman. King then returned the favor, setting up Horsman’s tie breaker at 7:44. King notched a power play goal near the end of the first period and secured a hat trick at 8:16 of the second period with an assist by junior Owen Sanders. South Kingstown battled back to a 4-4 tie before Horsman scored at 12:04 of the second period to regain the lead for Coventry. SK senior Nolan Quirk potted a short-handed goal at 5:28 of the third period to force overtime, where Oakers junior Evan Rogers scored the game-winner on the power play, set up by King and Horsman. Senior netminder Bill Whelan made 26 saves in the victory for Coventry.
Next up: Coventry travels to Lincoln on Jan. 13 before returning home to face West Warwick on Jan. 20.
Girls hockey:
Co-op faces out of town opponents
The Smithfield/Coventry/Moses Brown girls varsity hockey squad hosted Auburn High School from Massachusetts on Jan. 9 before traveling to Falmouth on Jan. 10. Results were not available by deadline for this article.
Next up: The local co-op team travels to Barrington on Jan. 18.
Boys basketball:
Oakers trounce Chariho
Coventry defeated Chariho 70-49 at home on Jan. 4, improving the Oakers’ record to 3-4 on the season and bringing their home record even at 2-2. Mt. Hope visited Coventry on Jan. 12; results were not available by deadline for this article.
Next up: Coventry travels to Pawtucket to play Shea High School on Jan. 16 before returning home to host Times Squared Academy on Jan. 18.
Girls basketball:
Coventry scores home win
The Oakers’ girls varsity basketball team rebounded from a 66-32 road loss to Chariho on Jan. 5 and a close 42-40 defeat by Cumberland on Jan. 9 with a 53-48 home victory over East Greenwich on Jan. 11. Coventry now holds a 6-5 record, good for seventh in Division 2.
Next up: Coventry hosts Woonsocket on Jan. 13 before kicking off a two-game road trip at Mount St. Charles on Jan. 15.
