Coventry Mourns Storied Coach, Educator George Egan

"It is with great sadness that the RIIL shares the news of the passing of George Egan, who spent the past five-plus decades serving Rhode Island high school student-athletes as an educator, hockey coach, statistician, sport director and much more," the Rhode Island Interscholastic League wrote on their Tumblr account Dec. 29 following word of Egan's death.

COVENTRY, RI — Members of Coventry schools  and athletics are mourning championship Ponaganset and Coventry High Schools hockey coach and former CHS Assistant Principal George Egan after his death Dec. 26, at 85.

“It is with great sadness that the RIIL shares the news of the passing of George Egan, who spent the past five-plus decades serving Rhode Island high school student-athletes as an educator, hockey coach, statistician, sport director and much more,” the Rhode Island Interscholastic League wrote on their Tumblr account Dec. 29 following word of Egan’s death.

George Egan’s long coaching and teaching career

An educator in Coventry Schools for 38 years, including decorated stints at Ponaganset and Coventry for 23 years, Egan also served for many years as the RIIL’s official hockey statistician and spent the past two decades serving as the RIIL’s hockey sport director.  Egan, a Boy Scout himself, dedicated 25 years to Camp Yawgoog as an adult supervisor, counselor, and Medicine Bow Camp Director.

“On behalf of the Principals’ Committee on Athletics, we want to honor and recognize George’s incredible dedication and unwavering commitment to the RI High School Ice Hockey Community,” said RIIL Executive Director Mike Lunney. “His lifetime of service as an educator, coach and RIIL Director of Hockey have been invaluable, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

According to Egan’s obituary in the Providence Journal, a funeral mass for Egan will be celebrated on Monday, Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. in St. Charles Borromeo Church, No. Main & Daniels St., Woonsocket, RI.  Visiting hours will be at Kubaska Funeral Home, 33 Harris Ave, Woonsocket, RI, on Sunday, Jan. 5 from 3 – 7 p.m.. Relatives and friends are invited.

“He will be missed by so many student athletes and their families. Rest easy coach. Thank you for being a champion for RI public school hockey,” Kristen Provorse Stringfellow commented on a Facebook post about Egan’s death.
