The City Council will consider a new ordinance outlining new rules for determining who will be issued concealed carry gun permits on April 6.

Warwick, RI – The Warwick City Council meets tonight at 7 p.m. in City Hall, after a series of committee meetings starting at 5 p.m., where they’ll consider, among other topics, second passage of new concealed carry permit rules and a vote of no confidence in school administrators.

Councillors voted first passage to Councilwoman Camille Vella-Wilkinson’s concealed carry gun permit ordinance April 7, adding to the description of “self-defense” when the city’s Public Safety Committee determines need, settling Warwick Police Chief Col. Stephen McCartney’s major misgivings about the law.

The change added a documented (through police report or restraining order) threat to the definition of self-defense as a criteria the Public Safety Committee should use when determining whether to grant a concealed carry license.

A copy of the updated ordinance is embedded below in the City Council docket.)

The resolution calling for a vote of non-confidence in school administrators is also presented by Vella-Wilkinson, will be discussed first at the Intergovernmental Committee at 6:20 a.m.

After that, it’s the second item under new business on the City Council’s agenda. The resolution is not yet drafted.
