WARWICK, RI — Warwick Schools Superintendent Lynn Dambruch, on personal leave since mid-March, is retiring, hinted at in the May 13 Warwick School Committee’s executive session agenda.
The executive session agenda lists two items for discussion, superintendent retirement and the appointment of an acting superintendent:
Personnel Matters:
1. Discussion: Related to Superintendent retirement under General Laws of Rhode Island RIGL 42-46-5(a)(1)
2. Discussion: Appointment of Acting Superintendent under General Laws of Rhode Island RIGL 42-46-5(a)(1)
Friday, Warwick School Committee Chairman confirmed Dambruch is retiring.
“The Superintendent is retiring at the close of this school year, after an incredible 39 year career with Warwick Public Schools,” Galligan said.
Dambruch Retiring Following Personal Leave
Dambruch has been absent from the position since taking leave the week of March 19 for 30 days, which would have been expired sometime in April. The leave roughly coincided with the RI Senate approval of the City Council’s request for a Warwick Schools Budget Commission April 13.
In Dambruch’s stead, Assistant Superintendent William McCaffrey has been serving as interim superintendent.
McCaffrey was not immediately available to answer questions about the the agenda items. Personnel matters are among the exceptions to open meeting law allowed to be discussed in private, and only the votes taken, if any, will be immediately reported when the body returns to open session Tuesday.
Dambruch served as Assistant Superintendent under Superintendent Phil Thornton before being appointed to Superintendent in 2021. She’s been with the district for 40 years, starting as a teacher in 1985 and later serving as Director of Elementary Education.
McCaffrey has also has served as Director of Secondary Education. A 27-year member of the Warwick Public Schools administration, he has served as director of the Warwick Area Career and Technical Center. McCaffrey is also the son of the late Eugene McCaffrey, former mayor of Warwick.
