WARWICK, RI — Strong winds and dry conditions have spurred a series of wildfires across the Los Angeles area since Jan. 7, claiming 28 lives, 55,000 acres and 16,000 buildings, including the homes of more than 20 LAPD officers, who the WPD LA fire aid fundraiser aims to help.

“The Warwick Police Department is launching a special campaign to support the brave officers of the LAPD Headquarters Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) who tragically lost their homes in the recent wildfires. The LAPD has been working around the clock alongside the LAFD in efforts to keep the city safe. We have been in touch with LAPD and they have 20+ active officers who have lost their houses and all of their belongings. We are collecting gift cards to help provide them with some relief during this challenging time,” Warwick Police wrote in a statement announcing their fundraising effort to help the West Coast officers.

Warwick Police Sgt. John Zaborski said he and other Warwick officers were moved to do something to help the LAPD officers as emergency personnel team up to fight the wildfires.

“We see the officers and firefighters out there on the front lines,” Zaborski said, “We’re just trying to give back to people who have lost everything. Every little bit would help with this unfortunate situation that they’re in.”

How You Can Help the WPD LA Fire Aid Fundraiser through Feb. 10:

• Drop-off location will be at Warwick Police Department, 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, Warwick, RI.

• Mail donations to:
