WARWICK, RI — Warwick Weekend events this week have the usual summer food attractions Friday,  and a fun community walk with lawn games, characters, WPD, WFD and pizza Saturday.

The weather for this week’s Warwick Weekend events threatens a chance of rain and thunderstorms throughout, with high temps in the  80s, and lows in the 60s, according to the National Weather Service. The chance of showers ranges from 20 to 40 percent, so while you won’t be stuck inside the whole time, you might want an umbrella, and maybe movie tickets, handy.

HAMM  Radio Field Day For decades, amateur “ham” radio operators have provided invaluable services during times of crisis, such as the Hurricane of 1938 and WWII. This weekend, you’re invited to see them in action! The annual North American emergency communications preparedness exercise, known as “Field Day,” begins at 2 p.m. this Saturday at the Masonic Youth Center, 116 Long St., Warwick, and runs 24 hours continuously, ending at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. All are invited!

Over the period of two days, as they have done for past 90 years, the women and men of the Providence Radio Association — W1OP will deploy four temporary shortwave radio stations in the fields of the Buttonwoods site, each station totally independent of the power grid or cellular networks. Using their field radios and temporary antennas, they will exchange test-messages with hundreds of similar groups across the U.S. and Canada. The stations will employ the latest digital messaging techniques, traditional voice 2-way radio, and even send and receive messages via the still-relevant Morse code – the original and still the most fault tolerant means of communicating by radio.
