WPD Officers Rescue Drowning Driver

WARWICK, RI — Warwick Police were called to to 376 Arnold’s Neck Drive  Oct. 18  at 7:17 p.m. for a reported vehicle submerged in the water, rescuing a drowning driver from Apponaug Cove, now in critical condition at Kent Hospital.

Officers Matthew Maloney, Nicholas Manocchio, and Maxwell Neiley, dispatched to the scene, observed a vehicle approximately 100 feet from shore, with only the roof visible above the waterline. Witnesses told them they’d observed someone in the driver’s seat prior to the vehicle sinking.

Without hesitation, Officers Maloney, Manocchio, and Neiley entered the water to attempt a rescue, Warwick Police stated in an announcement about the officers’ drowning driver rescue. The water was dark, and they could not see into the vehicle. After blindly searching the interior of the vehicle they were able to locate the sole occupant, identified as Frank Davis, 71, of Warwick, RI, inside the fully submerged vehicle, police report.

The officers removed Davis from the vehicle and swam back to shore with him. The Warwick Fire Department, which had also responded to the call, immediately initiated life-saving measures.

Davis was transported to Kent County Memorial Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

“The Warwick Police Department commends Officers Maloney, Manocchio, and Neiley for their bravery, quick thinking, and heroic actions in risking their own safety to save a life under challenging conditions. Their actions and dedication to public safety exemplify the highest standards of service,” the statement said.
