WPD: Hit & Run Jeep Driver Ran Over, Killed Man on Quaker Lane

UPDATE – 10:17 A.M. JULY 30: Warwick Police have identified the man killed by a hit & run Jeep driver Sunday on Quaker Lane as Nicholas Cote, 44, of Warwick.

The woman who struck Cote on Quaker Lane, then stopped, exited her vehicle to check on him and was struck by the Jeep before it ran over Cote, was Logan Barboza, 26, of West Warwick. Barboza was transported to
Rhode Island Hospital with serious bodily injuries.

JULY 29: WARWICK, RI — Warwick Police are looking for a hit & run Jeep driver who struck a woman and ran over and killed a man in the road near 709 Quaker Lane Sunday at about 9:39 p.m.

Officers responding to a call for a pedestrian struck by a driver found two victims in the Quaker Lane / Rte. 2 South lane, a man, 44, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and a woman, 26, who was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious bodily injuries, according to Warwick Police.

A witness who remained on scene provided a written statement to investigating officers.

The officers’ initial report indicates the woman had been traveling south on Quaker Lane when her vehicle struck a pedestrian, the man, in the right, south-bound lane, according to a statement on the incident.

When the woman got out of her vehicle to check on the man, a dark-colored SUV, described as a Jeep Grand Cherokee, struck her, causing serious bodily injury. The Jeep also ran over the pedestrian, killing him. The Jeep then continued south on Quaker Lane without stopping.

The Warwick Police Traffic Units’ Accident Reconstruction Team is leading the investigation and will be pursuing criminal charges against the Hit & Run Jeep Driver, police report.

The identification of the pedestrian killed is being withheld until his next of kin has been notified.
