WARWICK, RI — Warwick Post joins local media nationwide supporting local reporting during Local News Day today, encouraging business owners and readers to strengthen news rooms that inform local decisions and connect communities.

“Local News Day is a national day of action connecting communities with trusted local news. Our mission is simple: reconnect people to trusted local outlets, empower newsrooms to grow, and spark a national movement that sustains local news for generations,”  the Montana Free Press, managing partner of Local News Day, writes on its event home page.

Local News Day is led by a coalition of journalists, nonprofit leaders, and media innovators, including Montana Free Press, American Journalism Project, Press Forward, and more.

“Together, we are united to strengthen and uplift trusted local news and information across the country,”

Locally, Warwick Post, East Greenwich News, Ocean State Media, ecoRI News, Rhode Island CurrentRINewsToday, the Hummel Report, The Providence Eye, the Valley Breeze and What’s Up Newport are among more than 1,000 newsrooms across the United States participating in the inaugural Local News Day.

RI Foundation, Press Forward Grants Aimed at Local News Growth

The national day rallying support for local news coincides with the recent rollout of Press Forward Rhode Island’s grantmaking strategy for strengthening local news and helping Rhode Island communities stay informed, connected and engaged. Grant eligibility has been expanded to include collaborations between for-profit and nonprofit media organizations where nonprofits are the lead applicants. Pre-application opens June 22, with a deadline of July 16. Decisions are expected to be announced in December 2026.

“Reaching 1,000 participating newsrooms shows how much momentum is building around the idea that communities benefit when people start local,” said Dale Anglin, executive director of Press Forward, a Local News Day sponsor. “Across the country, communities are stepping forward to celebrate the role local reporting plays in helping people.”
