WARWICK, RI — When officers asked a North Kingstown man if there was any contraband in his car Sept. 10 at 1:54 a.m., he told them crack cocaine was in the car, observing he was going to jail anyways in making the crack admission.

Officer Diana Perez, patrolling Bald Hill Road, spotted a black 20218 Dodge Durango stopped in the left-hand turn lane of the Toll Gate Road intersection, about one car length beyond the stop line, in the cross walk. She followed the Durango onto Toll Gate Road and then onto Providence Street, where she pulled the SUV over and contacted the driver, approaching from the passenger side, according to the officer’s report.

Perez identified the driver as Nikolas T. Pereira, 32, 1006 Old Baptist Road, North Kingstown, and asked him if he had anything illegal in the SUV, according to the report. Pereira glanced around the interior nervously, and then at the center console, which Perez noted. Pereira said he did not, and Perez returned to her cruiser to check on Pereira’s background.

Crack Admission During Search

Officer Michael Petrarca arrived to assist, and Perez returned to the Durango, then asked Pereira to step out for a pat-down search with Petrarca’s assistance. Pereira removed two cigarette boxes from his pocket and handed them to Petrarca. Inside, the officer found several glass cocaine pipes.

Perez asked Pereira if there were any drugs in the Durango, to which Pereira eventually replied, “F**k, I’m going to jail anyways. Yeah,” according to Perez’s report.

Pereira directed the officers to the cup holder area of the Durango, where he said there was crack cocaine in a dab (chewing tobacco) container. Perez found the container and the crack, and arrested Pereira on suspicion of possessing controlled substances.

The officer transported Pereira to Warwick Police Headquarters, 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, where he was charged with one count of Possession of a Schedule I-V Controlled Substance, 10 grams or less, and was scheduled for an Oct. 9 hearing on the charge in Third Division District Court.

He was arraigned and released on $10,000 personal recognizance and scheduled for a Pre-Arraignment Conference Jan. 5., 2026.
