Officer Shoots, Kills Attacking Dog on Greenwich Ave

UPDATE – Monday, May 27: Warwick Police report an arrest during Sunday’s domestic disturbance call in which an attacking dog was shot and killed by an officer.

Police arrested Shaina Crossley, 43, of 734 Greenwich Ave. Apt. 2, charging her with Domestic Felony Assault, Domestic Vandalism, and Domestic Disorderly Conduct. Crossley was also charged with one count of Resisting Legal/Illegal Arrest.

Police added additional detail to the account of the arrest and shooting, noting the first officer to arrive found the dog attacking multiple people in the front yard of Crossley’s home. The dog also attacked the officer, biting him in the thigh and calf.

The officer shot the dog a single time to stop it from biting and to get it to release, according to Warwick Police. No additional injuries or damage from the single shot was reported. The officer and a single dog bite victim among the people being attacked were taken to Kent County Memorial Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

ORIGINAL STORY – MAY 26: WARWICK, RI — Warwick Police report an officer shot and killed an attacking dog biting people and the officer at 734 Greenwich Ave. 7:55 p.m. Sunday.

The officer and one of the people being attacked were bitten by the dog and transported to a local hospital, and are being treated for their injuries, police report. Officers transported the dog to a local animal hospital, where the dog was pronounced dead.

The RI Breaking News Service reported two ambulances dispatched to the scene for a dog attack at 8:04 p.m.

According to Warwick Police, officers were originally dispatched to the address for a reported domestic dispute between a man and woman. While en route to the address, officers were informed that a dog was attacking multiple people at the home.

The first officer to arrive saw the dog actively attacking people in the front yard. Then, the dog charged at the officer, biting him. The officer fired his firearm, stopping the dog.
