WARWICK, RI — Gov. Dan McKee is expected to sign the Warwick Schools Budget Commission legislation into law (2025-S 0242), and Sherri Kuntze, audit Manager at Cavanagh CPAs & Associates, LLC in Warwick is the School’s appointee to the 5-member body.
The legislation, passed in turn by the City Council, RI House and Senate, allows the city to create an overseeing body to review Warwick Public Schools finances, then present a preliminary analysis of the school district’s financial situation.
Deficit Spurs Warwick Schools Budget Commission
The enabling legislation was requested by a resolution of the Warwick City Council, after Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi proposed it upon learning that the school district faced a surprise mid-year $9 million deficit. The Warwick School Committee has reduced its projected budget deficit to $3.1 million as of Feb. 11.
“As part of the legislation, I was able to appoint one individual. I am pleased to announce that I have appointed Ms. Sherri Kuntze as the School Committee’s appointee. Please join me in thanking Sherri for her willingness to accept this position,” Warwick School Committee Chairman Shaun Galligan announced on his Facebook account.
Galligan shared that Kuntze is a lifelong Warwick resident who attended Warwick Public Schools and graduated from Pilgrim High School, prior to continuing on to Rhode Island College to earn a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Professional Accountancy. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with more than 10 years of experience in public practice, specializing in audits of schools and non-profit organizations throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Under the legislation, Mayor Picozzi gets three appointees to the board, the school department gets one, and Galligan gets one.
