Coventry Animal Control Officers responded to Circlewood Drive Dec. 19 for a wellbeing check of animals on the property, Coventry Police reported in a statement Wednesday.
When Coventry Animal Control arrived at the residence, they located a male German Shepherd, “Hanz” confined to a sunroom. He was clearly emaciated with his ribs, hips, and spine visible through his skin. There were no indications that the dog had access to any food or water, according to Coventry Police.
Animal Control took custody of the Hanz and he was immediately transported to an area Animal Hospital for treatment. Due to the severity of his condition, Animal Control was referred to an area Emergency Animal Hospital where Hanz was admitted for the night.
Wednesday, Caitlyn Pelton, 25, of Coventry, was arraigned at Kent County District Court on charges of Unnecessary Cruelty to Animal; Care Of Dogs (failure to provide adequate food or water); and Rabies Vaccination Required.
Pelton was released on $1,000 Personal Recognizance and was ordered not to have any animals. Pelton’s next court date is scheduled for Feb. 4 in 3rd District Court.
Hanz has been in the care of our Animal Control Officers since the Dec. 19 animal cruelty call. With the improvement of his health, he is now available for adoption. Coventry Animal Control is taking donations for Hanz’s medical care.
