COVENTRY, RI — Early Sunday morning, Coventry Police, Providence Police, ATF & FBI agents and U.S. Marhsals arrested a suspect in Saturday’s Brown University shooting.

However, WPRI12 reports that the man has since been released, following test results. Police are continuing their investigation, focusing on finding additional video evidence.

‘While a suspect has been detained, our work as a state is not over,” Gov. Dan McKee during a press conference about the arrest and the state and national response to the incident, “As governor, I’m committing to the city, and to Brown, and the broader community that has been impacted by this, to make sure everyone who needs assistance, mental health assistance, can access it.” McKee said his office has activated that state Mental Health Response Team to aid people in need of support.

McKee noted that the violence that left two dead and nine wounded on the Brown University campus Saturday had drawn the support of people nationwide. McKee said the tragedy was a national one.

A Christmas tree and menorah lighting planned for Sunday night at Lippitt Memorial Park in Providence on the first night of Hanukkah was instead held as a community vigil to support the victims and their families.

During the investigation, Providence Police shared a video of a suspect in the shooting to their Facebook Page. Today, CPD shared the FBI Boston Office’s update on the agency’s response and investigation of the shooting.

#FBI Boston established a command post to intake, develop and analyze leads, and run them to ground. We activated the FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team, to provide critical geolocation capabilities. As a result, early this morning, #FBI Boston’s Safe Streets Task Force, with assistance from the United States Marshals Service & the Coventry Police Department, RI detained a person of interest in a hotel room in Coventry, RI, based off a lead by the Providence Police Department.

We have deployed local and national resources to process and reconstruct the shooting scene – providing HQ and Lab elements on scene. We set up a digital media intake portal to ingest images and video from the public related to this incident. And the #FBI’s victim specialists are fully integrating with our partners to provide resources to victims and survivors of this horrific violence,” the agency  reported.
“We are deeply saddened over yesterday‘s tragic events and will stand and support our state and federal law-enforcement partners. Our condolences go out to the families who lost loved ones,” Coventry Police wrote on the department’s Facebook Page.
