[CREDIT: Laura Paton] Sean Welchm shows off his patriot spirit during the June 14 Gaspee Days 5k.[CREDIT: Laura Paton] Susan Bedard of Warwick shows off her red, white and blue in style during the June 14 Gaspee Days 5k.CRANSTON, RI — The 60th annual Gaspee Days 5K had overcast, drizzly weather in the mid 70s, as members of the 1,769-strong field crossed the finish line at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet to the cheers of spectators, many dressed for the patriotic celebration of America’s first fight opposing a king.
The number of runners was 28 more than last year.
Finishing first and second and third in the men’s division respectively were Gilmar Silvestre, 36, of Taunton, MA with a time of 14:20.0, Bronson Venable, 34, of Warwick, RI, with at time of 14:23.2 and Jack McMahon, 24, of Warwick, CT, with a time of 14:28.0.
Finishing first, second and third in the women’s division were Rachel Schilkowsky, 33, of Providence, RI with a time of 16:10.4, Lilly Tuck, 23, of Providence, with a time of 16:27.0, and Abbey Wheeler, 26, of Jamaica Plain, MA, with a time of 17:07.5.
Runners were welcomed by the crowd as they rounded the final corner headed toward Rhodes on the Pawtuxet for the final few hundred yards on Rhodes Place as the Gaspee Days Parade geared up down the road on Narragansett Parkway, scheduled for 10 a.m.
