UPDATE: 10:22 P.M. – The Rhode Island State Police announced that downtown Providence exit ramps will be closed intermittently Saturday.
Exit ramps to downtown Providence from Rte. 95 North (exit 37B) and South (exit 37B) and Route 6 East (Memorial Boulevard) will be closed at various times Saturday between 1 p.m. and approximately 4 p.m. due to increased pedestrian traffic for a scheduled demonstration at the State House.
PROVIDENCE, RI — Local organizers are readying another ‘No Kings’ protest set for Oct. 18, the latest gathering in opposition to President Donald Trump’s militarization of American cities, most visibly in raids carried out by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
In nearly all cases, ICE has claimed its objective is to arrest “violent immigrants,” yet the results of its operations prove otherwise.
After a ProPublica investigation found that more than 170 U.S. citizens have been detained by ICE this year, U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) introduced the “Stop ICE from Kidnapping U.S. Citizens Act” that would deny the agency funding if it continues “to detain United States citizens or transport such citizens outside the United States.”
In another case, U.S. Rep. Janelle Bynum (D-Ore.) demanded that ICE stop “kidnapping Americans” after its agents arrested California-born Frank Miranda, 46, for no apparent reason and released him the same day.
Locally, ICE agents were involved in an Oct. 14 vehicle crash in Providence after running a red light at Chalkstone Avenue and Raymond Street and colliding with a car. Providence Police quotes eyewitnesses as saying the ICE vehicle drove through the intersection without stopping, struck the other vehicle, then ran into a telephone pole, causing it to snap and fall.
The increasing presence of ICE — which operates with Trump’s blessing but without the knowledge of state and local law enforcement — has spurred higher attendance at peaceful protests across the country.
“This isn’t just politics,” states the No Kings website. “It’s democracy versus dictatorship. And together, we’re choosing democracy.”
No Kings posted a map of local events, including one in nearby East GreenwicH (RSVP here), the Rhode Island State House, and North Kingstown Town Hall.
CoupThe national protests will be the fourth since April protesting the Trump Coup seizing Congressional powers, defying court orders, starting a costly trade war, employing aggressive immigration policing tactics and violating due process. On April 5, Rhode Islanders also showed up for rallies in multiple communities for the Hands Off protests, and Rhod Island protesters joined nation-wide rallies against Trump again on April 19.
