WARWICK, RI — On July 20, at 3:58 p.m., Officer Michael Maccarone spotted a silver Chevy Cruze speeding in a 25 mph zone on West Shore Road, overtaking other cars by crossing into oncoming traffic, pursued and stopped the driver, arresting him on a reckless driver charge.

Maccarone made eye contact as the Chevy driver passed him headed east on West Shore Road, making no effort to signal lane changes and causing other drivers, including himself, to brake and swerve to avoid a crash, according to the officer’s report. Several other drivers sounded their horns at the driver, and Maccarone noted the sidewalk was heavily trafficked by pedestrians.

Maccarone made a U-turn and followed the Chevy, which turned down an alleyway and pulled into the driveway at 867 West Shore Road, which the officer suspected was an attempt to evade his traffic stop. Maccarone detained and questioned the driver, identifying him as Steven Poston, 29, of 210 Pavillion Ave., Providence, RI. Poston said he had been on his way home, in a hurry, and admitted he should not have been speeding through the area.

Reckless driver lacked license, valid plates, registration, insurance

A check of Poston’s license and registration revealed that his license was inactive, the plates on the car were for the wrong vehicle, which had a suspended registration, the car itself had a cancelled registration. Poston told Maccarone he had prior convictions for driving with a suspended license.

Maccarone arrested Poston and transported him to Warwick Police Headquarters, 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, where he was charged with reckless driving and cited for driving with a suspended license, fourth offense, driving with a cancelled registration, speeding, overtaking where prohibited, lack of due care, improper use of registration, operating without insurance, improper display of plates an failing to use turn signals.
