A Statewide Grand Jury indicted Copley for threatening Council President Hilary Lima.COVENTRY, RI — The RI Attorney General’s office reported former Coventry Dist. 5 Town Councilman Scott Copley indicted by a Statewide Grand Jury Wednesday for threatening a public official, Council President Hilary Lima, on March 21.
Copley Indicted for reportedly threatening ‘sexual violence’
The threat, repeated in open session by Solicitor Stephen Angel during the April 8 Town Council meeting, referenced sexual violence, that Copley was going to “skull fuck” Lima, as told to him by Council Vice President JP Verducci. Verducci said Copley uttered the threat against Lima during a heated discussion of the upcoming April meeting. Copley was agitated over his and Dist. 3 Councilman James LeBlanc’s attempts to access un-redacted invoices for Angell’s services. The two resigned prior to the April 8 meeting in protest over their frustrated attempts at access.
Coventry Police ultimately turned their investigation of the threat over to RI Attorney General Peter Neronha’s office. A copy of the CPD report has been attached to this article below.
When asked for comment, Copley’s lawyer, Attorney John D. Lynch, Jr., Esq., referred to the statement in the Coventry Police report provided by his lawyer at the time, and declined to elaborate until learning more about the inidctment.
“Mr. Copley has previously given a full detailed statement to the Coventry Police Department and at this point we would rely upon that statement. We have no further comment to make it this time as we have not been advised of the specifics of the indictment of the information relied upon to secure that indictment. We will defend this matter vigorously and expect that he will be fully exonerated,” Lynch wrote.
Copley is scheduled to be arraigned on July 25, 2025, in Kent County Superior Court.
