WFD Fights Condo Complex Fire, Rte. 2 Closed at Division Street

Editor’s note: Bethany Hashway contributed to this report.

Warwick, RI – RI State Police advise motorists to avoid Rte. 2 as the Warwick Fire Department’s effort to extinguish a nearby apartment complex fire has shut down the road at Division Street.

Firefighters were called to Westgate Conominiums at 754 Quaker Lane at about 10 a.m. this morning, where they used a ladder truck to help put out the fire. Several fire companies from neighboring communities, including Scituate, Coventry and Providence, responded to the fire, according to @EverettTrainer.

By about 11:15 a.m., traffic on Rte. 2 nearby had become gridlocked. RI State Police warned motorists away from the area, warning that the road has been shut down at Division Street.

By 4 p.m., firefighters had the fire mostly extinguished, and were just putting out the hot spots in the building, according to Trainer, who posted several photos of the fire.

Traffic remained backed up as of 4:30 p.m.

Warwick Post will update this story as more information becomes available.
