Warwick, RI – A state trooper stopped a blue Dodge Charger on Rte. 95 North Sunday at 11:45 a.m., finding a felon with a 9mm pistol and 9 oz of pot among the passengers, and arrested him.

The trooper charged Brandon D. Hayes, 30, of 502 Dexter St. #3, Central Falls, with illegal firearm possession, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm while committing a drug trafficking crime.

After stopping the Charger, the trooper found three bags of marijuana on Hayes’s person. The officer later learned that as he was pulling over the Charger, Hayes had removed a loaded 9MM Baikal Makarov IJ-70 pistol from his waist and put it under his seat.

The Trooper seized the gun, the marijuana, and searched the Charger’s trunk, finding a digital scale, a box of sandwich bags, and a large clear plastic bag labeled “9 ounces purple haze”.

According to State Police, Hayes has a lengthy criminal record including thirty-eight (38) arrests in the State of Massachusetts and two (2) arrests in Rhode Island for various offenses including gun possession and drug distribution charges.

Criminal history indicates that Hayes has been convicted on felony charges: in 2012 he was convicted for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and for possession with intent to distribute class B controlled substance, and he was sentenced to a two year term of incarceration with 18 months to serve and the balance in supervision.

Hayes had an initial appearance at the US District Court in Providence on Monday, July 13.
