The Warwick School Committee voted 4 to 1 for school consolidation option 5 Tuesday night, fating Warwick Veterans Memorial High School to conversion to a middle school and closing Aldrich and Gorton Junior High Schools, saving the district $4.5 million annually.
School officials asked the City Council to add $6,952,275 to Mayor Scott Avedisian’s level-funded $159,530,000 school budget proposal Thursday night, pleading for investment in spite of the Committee’s ongoing disagreement with Avedisian on the timing of school consolidation.
Gorton Jr. High School Science Teacher Mario Atoyan, well liked and respected by parents, is on leave pending the results of his day in court on sexual assault charges brought against him March 20.
