Gaspee Days Parade

June 8 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

The Pawtuxet Rangers march in the 2018 Gaspee Days Parade.

Also following Narragansett Parkway immediately after the Gaspeee Days 5K, the Gaspee Days Parade draws a teeming, enthusiastic crowd watching marching bands and floats from lawn chairs, front lawns, porches and roofs along Narragansett Parkway and Broad Street through Pawtuxet Village.

The parade features federal, state and local officials, the Pawtuxet Rangers, cannon fire, musket fire, and a long line of floats and community groups marching the route.

The Gaspee Days Committee has run the Gaspee Days Parade for more than 50 years. Combining colonial groups from all over with our modern and vibrant community, this is truly a show not to miss! Each year, friends and neighbors crowd along a two-mile stretch of Narragansett Parkway anxiously awaiting the march of the parade. Be it the fife and drums corps, the fire trucks, or the Shriners in their miniature cars, everyone has a favorite to look forward to!

The Gaspeee Days parade is one of several events throughout the year, culminating a long weekend in June starting Saturday with the foot race, proceeded immediately by the parade. The events celebrate Rhode Island’s lead role in the Revolutionary War, “The First Blow for Freedom,” in particular,  the 1772 burning of the HMS Gaspee by a daring band of Rhode Islanders from Pawtuxet Village.

The Gaspee Project at Waterfirnotes, “The attack on the Gaspee motivated further communication between the colonies in the form of the Committees of Correspondence and inspired the colonies to join together to seek their independence, ultimately leading to the founding of the United States of America.”

The British offered a reward for information about the Gaspee Affair and appointed a commission of inquiry to further investigate the matter. No one seemed to know anything when called to testify, according to the Gaspee Virtual Archives.

The events are honored with annual Gaspee Days celebrations of the events and heroes of that day in Pawtuxet Village, which return this weekend.
