WARWICK, RI — On March 24, the School Department and Warwick Fire Department added firefighters to the fire watch plan in effect at Norwood and Holliman Elementary Schools since fire alarms at those schools broke Feb. 24, and the addition may become permanent, the Norwood PTA reported on its Facebook page Friday.

“Fire watches will include a written 3 page plan that will include a mandatory firefighter (this part is under legal review).”

The firefighters on fire watch were added following public outcry after the broken fire alarms at the schools were made public knowledge. Prior to that, school janitors handled the fire watch duties.

“Clearly, if it ever again becomes necessary to have a fire watch in our schools, we should have a trained firefighter performing the fire watch,” said Councilman Jeremy Rix said Friday.

Rix noted that trained firefighters on Fire Watch is not required by the current policy.
